Headed north for the summer

This blog was originally supposed to be about sailing. So I thought I should have at least one article on that subject. We recently took our boat from Portland, OR up the coast to the San Juan islands for some extended cruising. While the wind wasn’t too favorable for sailing north, we did manage to get some sailing in anyway.

PicaroThings went along smoothly until we were approaching Port Angeles ( that would be our third day out ) thinking we were home free. But some big following sea action over stressed our little boat causing the rudder to shear off.  Fin keel boats need a rudder to do much of anything. We tried to rig some emergency steering without much success. We ultimately required a Coast Guard tow into Port Angeles for repairs.
